Located just down Black River Road from the Hügel Haus, the Black River National Scenic Byway is known for its hiking trails among spectacular waterfalls as the Black River winds it’s way through pristine and picturesque canyons covered in old growth hemlock forest in the Ottawa National Forest. The Black River flows through Great Conglomerate Falls, Potawatomi Falls, Gorge Falls, Sandstone Falls, and finally Rainbow Falls before it continues on under the iconic Black River Harbor Suspension Bridge and ultimately runs into Lake Superior at the Black River Harbor recreation area.
These breathtaking waterfalls are especially magnificent in the springtime, but the Black River waterfalls are great to visit in the summer, fall, and even winter (snowshoes recommended)
